Un uomo di 77 anni, trapiantato di cuore e con pregresse patologie croniche, è deceduto a causa del virus West Nile lunedì 28 luglio 2025. La morte è avvenuta alle ore 6.20 presso l’Istituto Lazzaro Spallanzani di Roma. Il paziente, residente a Isola dei Liri, aveva recentemente soggiornato a Baia Domizia, nel Casertano.
Il 77enne, che aveva ricevuto un trapianto di cuore nel 2014 e seguiva un percorso di follow-up presso l’Azienda Ospedaliera San Camillo Forlanini, soffriva di insufficienza renale cronica. Era stato ricoverato il 26 luglio a causa di febbre alta, che si era manifestata dal 20 luglio. La diagnosi di positività al virus è stata confermata il 28 luglio attraverso analisi di plasma e urine.
Il primo decesso legato al virus West Nile nel Lazio era avvenuto il 20 luglio, quando un’anziana di 82 anni, residente a Nerola, era deceduta all’ospedale San Giovanni di Dio di Fondi, in provincia di Latina. La donna era stata ricoverata il 14 luglio per febbre e stato confusionale.
Attualmente, in provincia di Roma, i comuni a rischio di esposizione al virus includono Anzio e Nettuno. Dei 44 casi confermati di positività al virus West Nile, 18 pazienti sono ricoverati in reparti ordinari per altre patologie, tre sono stati dimessi, 19 sono in cura a casa e due sono in terapia intensiva.
Sedici nuovi casi nel Lazio
Sedici nuovi casi di positività al virus West Nile sono stati registrati nel Lazio, come confermato dalle analisi effettuate presso il Laboratorio di virologia dell’Istituto Nazionale per le Malattie Infettive ‘Lazzaro Spallanzani’. Tra questi, quattro presentano sindrome neurologica e dodici hanno manifestato febbre da West Nile Virus. Il decesso odierno è stato attribuito a un caso di esposizione probabile nella provincia di Caserta.
Con queste ultime conferme, il totale dei casi di infezione da West Nile nel 2025 è salito a 44. Di questi, 41 sono stati registrati in provincia di Latina, inclusa la paziente deceduta la scorsa settimana, mentre due casi sono stati segnalati in provincia di Roma e uno al di fuori della regione, con esposizione probabile in provincia di Caserta. I comuni nella provincia di Latina a rischio includono Aprilia, Cisterna di Latina, Fondi, Latina, Pontinia, Priverno, Sezze e Sabaudia.
Cos’è il virus West Nile
Il virus West Nile è un agente patogeno trasmesso dalle zanzare, in particolare da quelle del genere Culex pipiens, e colpisce principalmente gli uccelli selvatici. Le zanzare si infettano pungendo gli uccelli e possono occasionalmente trasmettere il virus ad ospiti accidentali, come i cavalli e gli esseri umani. Le zanzare che veicolano il virus West Nile non appartengono alla specie tigre, ma sono le comuni zanzare notturne, attive al tramonto e all’alba. Altre modalità di trasmissione includono trasfusioni di sangue e trapianti di organi da donatori infetti. Raramente, sono stati segnalati casi di infezione congenita trasmessi dalla madre al feto attraverso il latte materno.
I sintomi
La maggior parte delle persone infette dal virus West Nile non presenta sintomi evidenti. Tra coloro che sviluppano sintomi, circa il 20% manifesta segni lievi come febbre, mal di testa, nausea, vomito, ingrossamento dei linfonodi e rash cutanei. Questi sintomi possono durare da pochi giorni a qualche settimana e variano in base all’età del paziente. Nei bambini, è comune osservare febbre leggera, mentre nei giovani si possono riscontrare febbre alta, arrossamento degli occhi, mal di testa e dolori muscolari. Negli anziani e nelle persone con condizioni di salute compromesse, i sintomi possono essere più gravi. Le manifestazioni più severe si verificano in meno dell’1% dei casi (una persona su 150) e possono includere febbre alta, forti mal di testa, debolezza muscolare, disorientamento, tremori, disturbi visivi, torpore, convulsioni, fino a paralisi e coma. Alcuni effetti neurologici possono persistere nel lungo termine.
